Ididn’t say a word about Salazar’s expert shooting, just grabbed my weapon and took twenty shots. All head shots, and all landing between the eyes. Good enough for me. I was ready for what lay ahead. If Salazar was somehow involved in all of this, his watching me take target practice reminded him of what he was up against.

Hansen clapped her hands together. “You guys need anything else?”

Salazar pointed to the still-open vault. “It might not be a bad idea to have a dagger just in case things go hand-to-hand.”

I raised both eyebrows as I looked his way. “Man, you went from Napoleon Dynamite to Rambo in no time.”

Hansen laughed gutturally. Salazar didn’t. He reached in and grabbed a jambiya, a short, curved blade usually used in Middle Eastern countries.

I locked eyes with Salazar and pointed to the blade. “Be careful. You might hurt yourself.”

He flung it around like he’d used it a time or two and then hid it in his waistband. “Hopefully, I won’t need it.”

We walked upstairs, where the television in the far corner of the room was playing loud enough to grab my attention. I looked over and noticed Tremblay’s face from the photos I’d seen earlier.

“Isn’t that the guy who’s next on Pacheco’s list?” I asked.

Salazar didn’t respond. He and Hansen sat down on the couch and listened to what Tremblay was saying.

He was speaking to a large group of students at the local Camosun College. Tremblay had a firm yet reassuring voice that seemed to win others over. Certainly, the thousands of students listening appeared to be behind him, cheering every few minutes.

“So, why don’t we get down to that college and keep our eyes on Tremblay? It’s why we’re here, right?”

Salazar stood up and patted his waistband, where he held his pistol and dagger. “Let’s do it.”

We exited through the front door. Hansen started to close it as we left, then poked her head out and said, “Let me know if you guys need anything. I’m here to help.”

I nodded and then climbed into the passenger seat.

The college was ten miles northeast of Langford. The drive was traffic free, but the last mile into the place was packed with red brake lights.

Salazar hadn’t said two words since we left the safe house. I broke the awkward silence.

“So, what’s our plan here? Are we just lying low and following Tremblay as best we can?”

“For now, but then we really need to meet with him and explain the danger he’s in. Not sure he’ll listen to us, but it’s worth a shot.”

I nodded. “Sounds like a plan. Any suggestions on how we can get an audience with him?”

Our car was sandwiched in between two SUVs, none of us moving.

Salazar took his eyes off the road and looked at me for a few seconds before responding. “Something tells me Tremblay would respond better to just one of us meeting with him. I think both of us would be a bit much. Just let me handle it.
